Laps for Life Fundraiser 2024
All Day PDT
$3,690 Raised
On Sat. 4/6/24 I will be swimming in my 3rd Annual Laps For Life Charity Fundraiser to benefit the Swim With Mike (SWM) Foundation and humanitarian projects of The Rotary Foundation (TRF).
In April 2022, I swam 250 laps (6,250 yards = 3.78 miles) and raised $5,200. In April of this year, I swam 300 laps (7,500 yards = 4.26 miles) and raised $8,369. On April 6, 2024, my goals are to swim 325 laps (8,125 yards = 4.62 miles) and to raise $10,000.
I feel a special personal connection to the SWM Foundation due to my own serious accident as a teenager in which I fell from an avocado tree and broke my neck (fracture dislocation of C-2, C-3 and C-4). However, I was extremely fortunate that I was not paralyzed in the accident. The SWM Foundation's mission is to change the lives of student athletes who have experienced catastrophic injury or illness by providing scholarships, creating community and instilling hope and purpose. My own accident many years ago is a constant reminder to me that life is fragile, and to give back to those who are less fortunate. SWM is growing nationally and internationally, and their main sponsor is Jersey Mike’s Subs. Jersey Mike’s has raised a two million dollars for SWM since its inception, and they have agreed to run commercials for a week in Jan. 2024 to help promote awareness of SWM.
In addition, as a recent past president of the Westlake Sunrise Rotary Club, I remain very active in the club regarding all the community service and humanitarian projects that Rotary provides all over the world. The Rotary Foundation (TRF) was started in 1918, and its mission is to help Rotarians around the globe to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment, and alleviating poverty. TRF has spent more than $4 Billion on life-changing, sustainable projects. While it has been involved in many projects over the years, TRF is probably best known for its efforts over the last forty years to combat polio. TRF is consistently given high marks by Charity Navigator (100% rating, and 4 out of 4 stars), which ranks non-profit organizations by their efficiency of operations- 91% of the funds it raises go to the charities it benefits around the globe.

Jim! Wishing you the best poolside this weekend!!!! - - Dan Weikel
Thanks Dan! I was able to swim 360 laps. You inspired me to go a little further. Training for a swim from Catalina to the mainland ( 22 miles) is definitely an inspiration to me! Also, a swimmer at Swim With Mike ( Scott Brown, USC Swim Team) reminded me that, technically, a mile is 72 laps, and not the 66 laps in the 1,650 yard freestyle event that we have today. So, that meant I needed to swim 360 laps to hit 5 miles- not 330 laps.
