Dr. John S. Dahlem – Dare to Dream!

“I’ve never seen anyone win who thought they would lose, but I’ve seen lots of people who thought they could win, win when they should have lost!”— John S. Dahlem

Dr. John S. Dahlem lived a life defined by service, leadership, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in the potential of others. Throughout his remarkable journey as a teacher, coach, principal, soldier, adventurer, husband, father, and grandfather, he inspired thousands of young people to dream bigger, work harder and believe in themselves.

Born on July 24, 1943, John graduated from Santa Monica High School and the University of Oregon. He served his country with distinction as a First Lieutenant and Company Commander in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star for his leadership and valor.

For 37 years, John dedicated his professional life to education in the Anaheim Union High School District. At Loara High School, he built one of Southern California's most successful wrestling programs, earning numerous championships and coaching honors while helping shape the character and futures of countless students.

His influence extended well beyond athletics, eventually serving as a high school Principal and later as President of the CIF Southern Section. In recognition of his lifelong commitment to preserving the history of high school athletics, the CIF Southern Section named its historical archive the John S. Dahlem Digital Library.

John's passion for challenging limits extended far beyond the classroom. An accomplished endurance athlete and mountaineer, he completed eight marathons, summited Mt. Everest with his son Ryan in 2010, completed the Seven Summits, and later achieved the Explorers Grand Slam by reaching both the North and South Poles—an accomplishment achieved by only a select few people worldwide.

Yet, those who knew John best would tell you that his greatest achievements were not measured by championships won, mountains climbed, or records set. They were measured by the lives he touched, the confidence he instilled, the example he set, and the encouragement he gave to generations of students, athletes, colleagues and friends.

John believed that the purpose of life was to lead a life of purpose. The John S. Dahlem Scholarship seeks to carry that belief forward by helping Loara High School students pursue their dreams, develop their potential, and create lives of purpose of their own.

His legacy continues—not only in what he accomplished, but in the opportunities we create for those who follow in his footsteps.
