"Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
The Silver Denarius, or tribute penny, is thought to be the coin that was shown to Jesus when he made his famous speech "Render to Caesar..."
This Silver Denarius is an exquisite ancient Roman coin minted in Lugdunum (Lyon) in the early years of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, estimated to be between 14 and 37 A.D.
On the obverse side of the coin, you will find the inscription "TI CAESAR DIVI F AVGVSTVS" encircling a laureate head facing right. This represents the image of Tiberius, the successor of Emperor Augustus and the ruler of the Roman Empire during that period.
The reverse side features the inscription "PONTIF MAXIM" and depicts the figure of Pax, the personification of peace. Pax is seated to the right, with a long vertical scepter held in her right hand, symbolizing her authority, while her left hand grasps a branch, representing peace and prosperity. The legs of Pax are depicted on the chair, which lacks ornate details.
This silver denarius is a remarkable example of ancient Roman coinage, showcasing the fine early style of the time. Its well-preserved condition, intricate design, and historical significance make it a highly prized piece among numismatic collectors, offering a tangible connection to the reign of Emperor Tiberius and the artistic craftsmanship of that era.
