Bertica grew up in the Dominican Republic surrounded by tropical nature. Last May, one of her students gifted me with a bouquet of Peonies. I was truly astonished as I watched them open. It seemed as if they were more beautiful each day and they served as an inspiration for a series of paintings on which I am still working. Not being very familiar with this flower, I looked up their significance and found that Peonies are powerful, historically rich flowers representing prosperity, good fortune, romance, and honor, often referred to as the “King of Flowers.” Commonly featured in wedding bouquets for a happy marriage, they symbolize bashfulness in Victorian times, while in Chinese culture, they represent wealth, feminine beauty, and nobility. Her hope is that it brings all that they represent to the highest auction bidder and that each day, he or she is reminded of all that is good in the world.
